Just days after completing his 26,000-kilometre run around the world, Tom Denniss has been nominated as a NSW finalist for the Australian of the Year 2014.
Dr Denniss knew about the nomination before Friday but had to keep the secret to himself when he was invited to attend The Illawarra Connection networking dinner at the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach on Tuesday night.
But he was able to share the news when the Australian of the Year Awards published it on its website and described him as an entrepreneur and marathon runner.
"It was a humbling surprise," he said.
"I am one of four state finalists in the Australian of the Year category. I am sure the others are more deserving and have done a lot more important things than me. I've been told there are thousands of nominations each year."
The NSW national finalist will be announced on November 18.
The awards website noted how Dr Denniss recently became the fastest person to circumnavigate the world on foot, after an epic journey saw him run a marathon each day for 622 days, totalling an epic 26,232 kilometres.
