Preschoolers dug their hands deep into the soil yesterday to plant all manner of vegetables, plus some strawberries and an orange tree, at Warilla Child Care Centre.
The raised vegie gardens are part of the preschool’s initiative to educate children and their families about healthy and sustainable eating.
Teacher Melanie Cluff said the kids loved learning about how to grow plants and would enjoy the fruits of their labours once the produce was ripe.
‘‘We’ll use it in our cooking, will be talking to the children about healthy eating, and if we’ve got plenty of things that grow we’ll give it to the families to use at home too.’’
Aided by Bunnings Shellharbour, the garden is part of Shellharbour City Council’s Growing Minds Greening Communities project, which helps childcare centres operate more sustainably and educates children on how to reduce their impact on the environment.
