Port Kembla, Wollongong and Balgownie have claimed first innings points and will be chasing an outright win in this afternoon’s day two in round two of Illawarra cricket.
Dapto also took first innings points in a thriller against University, leaving only Keira v Helensburgh still battling for first innings points at the start of day two.
In the first two-day competition match for 18 months bowlers in every game dominated, with 21 wickets falling at North Dalton Park between Corrimal and Wollongong.
Corrimal routed Wollongong for 88, with Xavier Larder taking 3-2.
But Wollongong’s bowlers, led by Kain Flynn-Duncombe (3-5) and Sam Mutch (3-23), charged back, dismissing the visitors for a meagre 79.
Wollongong resume at 1-40 with both teams certainly holding hope of taking outright points.
At University Oval, both Uni and Dapto will also be chasing maximum points after 19 wickets fell on day one as Dapto scraped home for first innings points.
Having dismissed the Students for just 113 – with Pat Hammond taking 5-38 – Dapto were 9-107 before No10 Taylor Harvey (19 not out) and No11 Joel Hawksworth (4 not out) secured victory.
Ryan Holcroft took 5-21 for Uni, who will want a better batting effort today to press for the outright win.
Meanwhile, veteran Greg Wray took 5-13 as an impressive Port Kembla rolled Northern Districts for just 91 and then made 6-126 to set up their push for an outright.
At Judy Masters Oval, Balgownie have a 92-run lead over Wests Illawarra and will resume 6-220, with skipper Adam Berwick on 77.
Wests were dismissed for 128 on day one and will likely need to bat well today to prevent an outright loss.
Finally, Keira are on top at 0-20 chasing 159 for victory away to Helensburgh.
The Keira bowlers, led by Neel Honavar (4-52), dominated day one and their batsmen will be looking to finish the job against one of the competition’s best bowling attack.
