Form batsman Adam Berwick has never been an automatic selection for Illawarra but wants to lock down a spot for Sunday’s Sydney T20 opener by making runs in tonight’s trial against Bankstown.
Illawarra host Bankstown at North Dalton Park in the final hit-out before selectors name their squad for Illawarra’s debut in the Sydney T20 competition on Sunday against Parramatta.
Balgownie skipper Berwick has blasted centuries in the first two Illawarra competition rounds, plus a handy 36 for Illawarra, who chased down 166 against Sutherland last Wednesday night.
‘‘I’d love to be in the team for Sunday,’’ Berwick said.
‘‘It’s going to be a bit for history for Illawarra as an association and if I can get some runs [against Bankstown] it’ll help my case.’’
With two tons and a contribution for Illawarra already this season, Berwick could not have done more to press his case, but the top order batsman isn’t taking anything for granted.
‘‘I’ve had ups and downs in a decade in Illawarra cricket and have never been an automatic selection for the rep team,’’ Berwick said.
‘‘I want to play at the highest level and hopefully the good form continues.’’
The Illawarra and Newcastle associations join an expanded Sydney T20 competition this season.
After facing Parramatta at Old Kings Oval, Illawarra have an away double-header in their pool against Sutherland and St George on November 3 .
Following the impressive four-wicket win over Sutherland last Wednesday, in which Illawarra chased down 166 under lights, Illawarra coach Dean Merola has added several new players for tonight’s game.
Northern Districts skipper Mark Johnson is back as vice-captain, while Dapto skipper Michael Stephenson takes over the gloves from Josh Hill.
In-form Keira all-rounder Neel Honaver has his opportunity, along with Keira’s new recruit Daniel Laus.
