THE Bulli open men's surfboat crew will be a high-profile absentee when the Australian Surf Rowers League series kicks off at Mollymook on November 2.
The defending Surf Rowers League champions - Dean Roberts, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe and Daniel Polla - have set their sights on winning Australia's most prestigious surfboat marathon race, the George Bass Surfboat Marathon, in December. The seven-day 190km event held every two years is the world's longest and toughest endurance surfboat race and sweep Paul Jones said a different training regime, with a focus on endurance, was needed.
"We'll do a few of the local [short-course] carnivals, but our focus this side of Christmas is the George Bass," Jones said.
"We're in heavy training at the moment, doing heaps of kilometres, then come the new year we'll be looking at defending our Surf Rowers League open championship," he said.
"We'll have the state and nationals to focus on as well."
The crew made a winning return at the 14km Georges River Run in September, but the otherwise sparse endurance racing calendar will see most of the preparations carried out in house.
