Investigators are examining an area of bushland in the escarpment over Jamberoo for clues to what caused a fire on Thursday afternoon.
Swift action by the community and RFS volunteers had the blaze contained within two hours. It began at 1.30pm in bushland off Nuninuma Drive and destroyed less than a hectare of bushland before it was extinguished by ground crews and a waterbombing helicopter.
NSW RFS Illawarra zone Inspector Michael Gray said the fire might have spread further if not for a very early call from a member of the community, and the readiness of firefighters.
A strike team based at Albion Park responded, with crews from Jamberoo and Gerringong.
‘‘We were lucky it was under the escarpment so it was a little sheltered from the strong westerly winds,’’ he said.
