Beaton Park Tennis Centre's finest young prospects rolled out in their numbers yesterday to help the club's push for glory in the AO Blitz tour.
Organised by Tennis Australia, the competition gives communities the chance to win prizes and potentially be represented at the Australian Open by one of the world's top players as a bonus.
With 256 players up for grabs for the tennis major, Tennis NSW Community Tennis Officer Troy Smith urged local participants to continue their support in a bid to increase the Illawarra club's chances.
"We have got from now until January and obviously the more points that Wollongong can accrue in that time, the better their chances of securing a player in time for the Australian Open."
Smith believes the size of the Australian Open made it vital for the sport to engage communities through projects like AO Blitz.
"This is probably one of the biggest fan bases that we have out in the country and metro areas," he said.
"The kids are key to that. We need to really engage them for the betterment of our sport."
