A man is set to front Wollongong Local Court this morning over an alleged assault in Balgownie last night.
Just after 5pm yesterday, a 26-year-old man was approached by another man, aged 23, while walking along Ellengowan Crescent.
Police have been told the pair became involved in an argument, before the younger man allegedly kicked the older man in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.
A nearby off-duty police officer witnessed the assault and arrested the younger man.
Officers attached to Wollongong Local Area Command attended a short time later and launched an investigation.
The older man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Wollongong Hospital.
He sustained serious head injuries, including a fractured skull.
He is in a serious but stable condition.
The 23-year-old Towradgi man was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear in court today.
