Wollongong and other parts of the Illawarra were again blanketed in smoke on Sunday morning, with the hazy conditions the result of backburning operations in the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury.
A spokesperson for the NSW Rural Fire Service said that significant backburning operations were being undertaken in those regions.
Closer to the Illawarra, the Hall Road Fire has been contained and back-burning and cleaning up operations will continue in coming days.
For the first time in nearly a fortnight, all NSW bush and grass fires are now listed at ‘‘Advice’’ level thanks to milder conditions and the continuing work of firefighters.
People should avoid undertaking heavy exercise while pollution levels are high and it is recommended that asthmatics carry their puffers with them at all times.
The best way to avoid the smoke is to remain indoors with the doors and windows closed.
