We have all enjoyed seeing a colourful range of Illawarrians as they highlighted their hair and gave their support to raise the urgently needed funds for the Light and Hope Clubhouse.
The clubhouse is open for its members only two days a week, and is a far cry from the five days a week clubhouse facility available in cities all round the world.
Today I would like to introduce you to a quiet achiever, Lynne Hutton, who with the support of the Light and Hope committee has been working with all her heart and soul to maintain the clubhouse for just two days a week. Without further community support the clubhouse will be forced to close its doors.
Employed by the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW, Lynne has watched the improvements in the lives of so many clubhouse members and she is profoundly committed to educating the Wollongong community in the values and benefits of clubhouse membership.
Lynne was treated to a new colour this week at Envy Hair Gallery, Princes Highway, Unanderra. Salon owner Paula Reali interacted multi colours with blonde highlights, and then shaped and styled Lynne’s hair for her photo. The salon has been awarded with the De Lorenzo ASPYA, which distinguishes a high standard of practice.
The Gallery is also recognised as one of Wollongong’s most highly qualified in the art of permanent make-up.
Paula has been practising in the art of tattoo for 14 years, but now finds that permanent facial make-up, areola colour implanting and general skin enhancement has become her specialty. She has also just acquired the exclusive franchise for SKINIAL in the Illawarra, the latest new process in tattoo removal.
Many of the Light and Hope Clubhouse members have been treated to a complimentary service in one of the 20 Highlights for Hope salons, just another generous gesture from all the hairdressers in this appropriate partnership. International research strongly identifies the hairdresser’s role as an accidental counsellor for their clients.
With the support of the Light and Hope committee, Lynne has dedicated almost a decade to the establishment of the clubhouse, situated in the hall behind St John’s Lutheran Church in Burelli Street.
“The Lutheran church has been amazingly generous to the clubhouse and very gracious in the way they have supported the members,” she said.
“I now have renewed hope that we may survive, thanks to this wonderful partnership with the salons of the Illawarra.
‘‘I have found it inspirational being in meetings with the proprietors of the salons who are participating in the Highlights for Hope project.
‘‘Their understanding and knowledge of the mental health issues in the community, and their commitment to make a contribution to the welfare of the community has been amazing.
‘‘The hairdressers have been generous with their friendship, goodwill, energy and resources. ‘‘They have elevated communication and in doing so, they are rapidly de-stigmatising the topic of mental health.’’
