Australian actor Samuel Johnson is urging the Wollongong community to set him a dare when he unicycles into town next month.
The actor – best known for roles in The Secret Life of Us and Rush – has accepted all manner of dares as part of his epic 12-month journey around Australia on one wheel.
The Bendigo community dared him to drag race a tram down the main street; Junee challenged him to a bowling competition and in Cowra he had to catch a carp with his hands and kiss it.
But the main challenge for the actor is to support his sister Connie, who has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, by helping to raise awareness of the disease as well as $1 million for the Garvan Research Foundation.
‘‘Our primary aim is to remind every mum in the land to be breast aware and we feel this is best done by engaging directly with the communities we pass through,’’ Mr Johnson said.
‘‘We are asking Wollongong to issue me with a fund-raising dare of their choosing ... Essentially we are hoping to tap into what makes each town unique and so we do need your help.’’
This is Connie’s third battle with cancer; at the age of 11 she fought off a rare and aggressive bone tumour in her leg, then at 22, she overcame a tumour in her womb.
This time the 35-year-old mother of two has breast cancer which has spread to her lungs, liver, pelvis, spine and knee and she has a life expectancy of six to 12 months.
Mr Johnson said what started as a joke between him and his sister, turned into a promise which saw him set out on February 15 this year on his unicycle.
Since then he’s clocked up more than 11,200 kilometres on the Love Your Sister tour – and raised an impressive $932,246 – and he’s still going strong.
As well as breast cancer awareness, he hopes to crack the Guinness World Record for the longest journey on a unicycle – 14,686.82 kilometres.
He’s also engaging with communities along the way – with many schools and community groups organising fund-raisers for breast cancer support and research while he’s in town.
Then there’s the small matter of the dare. We ask readers to suggest dares when he arrives on December 9. Send them to email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
