When I read the comments some of the councillors are making about the conditions and working hours of council employees, not to mention some of the comments made online by people who are happy enough to hide behind anonymity, I’m disgusted at the sheer lack of solidarity with the lower-paid.
I concede that this has sadly always been the case, but it isn’t good enough. I thought this city had different principles.
People who are prepared to sacrifice workers’ conditions for the sake of economic primacy miss the point of solidarity completely.
For a council’s general manager to take part in an annual “CEO Sleepout” in support of the St Vincent de Paul Society and then eight months later be prepared to sacrifice people’s jobs and services smacks of hypocrisy, and I condemn this hypocrisy in the highest language possible.
