Wollongong art scene pulled onto mag pages

The work of Wollongong's art scene will jump from walls and computer screens into your living room, with the launch of a new publication documenting the region's current crop of creatives.

Art collective OKYO has published Wollongong Creatives In Print, a collection of work from 58 photographers, artists, designers, illustrators and creative businesses.

Launched last night at His Boy Elroy, OKYO project manager Kate Armstrong said the publication was a snapshot of Wollongong's art community.

"I've been working with a lot of artists in Wollongong and saw an opportunity for a compilation of all their strengths in one place," she said.

"We see a lot of art online but it flashes by, we don't take time to stop and consider it. The publication is to represent what's happening in the area on the date it is published."

The publication features a number of prominent creatives, including some of the artists from the Wonderwalls street art festival as well as drivers behind Studio 19 art space, Wild Rumpus, Verb Collective and a handful of local clothing designers. Ms Armstrong said contributors ranged from professional artists to high school students.

Jessica Bee contributed an example of her analogue photography on vintage 35mm film. She said it presented a unique and rare opportunity for Wollongong artists to have their work shown in a print publication.

"It is what we have needed, a chance for emerging artists to be published and seen alongside more established artists," she said.

"I'm excited to have something physical to hold and see. Maybe someone will use the images for something, pull them out and put it on their walls."

Ms Armstrong said by bringing a diverse range of work all together in the one publication, she hoped it would bring further attention to the region's teeming creative community.

"It is people who have had a part in crafting the burgeoning art scene here, and who are key in pushing it to the next level," she said.
