Teens knocked off stolen trail bike: police

Two teenage boys accused of stealing a trail bike have been hospitalised after the bike’s owner tracked them down and knocked them off the bike with his car.

The bike disappeared from a home in Albion Park on Friday morning, prompting the 22-year-old owner and his passenger to drive around area streets, searching for it.

About 1.50pm the man spotted two teenage boys riding a bike near the intersection of Windle Street and Whitfield Place at Lake Illawarra.

Lake Illawarra police inspector Paul Allman said the man identified the bike as his and ‘‘made a quick, right-hand manoeuvre to Whitfield Street in an attempt to stop or block the pathway of the bike’’.

‘‘As a result of this a collision occurred, causing the riders to fall off.’’

One of the boys, aged 17, was taken to Wollongong Hospital with serious fractures to his left leg. He remained in a stable condition last night.

The passenger on the bike, aged 14, was airlifted to St George Hospital with a ruptured spleen and serious internal injuries.

The car driver was arrested, and was speaking with detectives at Lake Illawarra Police Station last night.

Police are asking witnesses to the incident to make contact via Crime Stoppers - 1800 333 000 - or the Lake Illawarra Police Station - 4232 5599.
