The Illawarra truly embraced the Christmas spirit over the weekend, with the Shellharbour City Council Carols By Candlelight attracting thousands to Reddall Reserve.

Scores of people from across the region joined together for the largest carols event in the Illawarra, running through dozens of Christmas songs from the conventional to the contemporary.

From Joy To The World and Silent Night to Jingle Bell Rock and Six White Boomers, the full gamut of Christmas favourites old and new were covered by the nearly 40-strong vocal contingent.

Players from Roo Theatre’s upcoming production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat stopped in to lend a hand, while even Santa himself dropped by to sing a song or two with Mrs Claus.

Wollongong is next up for Christmas carols, with the Botanical Gardens to host several thousand people on Saturday December 21.

LED candles will replaces the traditional flame candles this year due to safety issues. Wollongong City Council are asking those interested in attending to pre-register here.
