GALLERY: Wollongong's Movember calendar men

The ‘‘manliest men in Wollongong’’ have ditched their razors, then their inhibitions, then their pants in a bid to raise mo’ money for charity.

The resulting Men of Movember nude calendar shows 12 Wollongong 20-somethings fishing, banjo-plucking, drinking and playing pool as if unaware they are butt-naked.

The pin-ups spent November growing their best facial hair and then posed for the camera wearing only a few strategically placed props.

Mr April  Tim Day – who posed while careening down North Wollongong’s Bode Avenue on a skateboard – said the project was conceived when a group of friends, most of them working in Wollongong’s hospitality industry, decided to combine their Movember fund-raising efforts. Models were chosen for their enthusiasm, not necessarily their looks.

‘‘In every calendar you see with nude people, it’s always really beautiful people. We thought, ‘Stuff that, we can do it as well’,’’ said Mr Day, a manager at Wollongong’s The Howlin’ Wolf bar. ‘‘Our No1 [goal] was to sell calendars to raise money for charity. No2: we just want people to have a laugh.’’

Some of the photos, shot by Josh Haberfield (himself a pin-up – Mr June) give a clue to the man behind the mo.

There is Simon Evans (Mr May) – a chef at Keira Street fine dining restaurant Caveau – giving cheek behind his barbecue; Illawarra Brewery bartender Joshua Scully looking at home on a throne made of kegs and musician Sebo Grego (Mr September) with only a banjo to protect his modesty.

The role of Mr November was reserved for the most mustachioed in the group – Caius Don-Pounder, who poses as an artist at his easel.

About 130 of the 1000 calendars have sold, several to the men’s mothers. All proceeds will go to the Movember Foundation.

The group will launch the calendar at the Brewery tomorrow night.

Calendars sell for $10 here, the Brewery or The Howlin’ Wolf.
