The school recently bought a colony of stingless native bees and a hive for their outdoor kitchen garden, thanks to Shellharbour City Council's Small Environment Projects fund.

While the bees don't produce much honey, they are an important part of the schoolyard, helping to pollinate fruit, vegetables and native plants around the Albion Park site.

Students have visited the hive during science classes and lunchtime gardening sessions, learning about their life cycle and the importance of biodiversity.

The council's Small Environments Project fund offers $10,000 each year to assist community and education groups to undertake environmental projects in the Shellharbour area.

Applications for the next round of funding are expected to open in the second half of next year.
