Almost 55,000 NSW students received an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR), which is used by universities to determine which students they will accept into courses next year.
An ATAR is not an average of a student’s HSC marks, which they received on Wednesday, but a rank measuring a student’s overall performance in relation to all other students.
This year 48 students received an ATAR of 99.95, the highest possible rank, including 16 girls and 32 boys from a mix of government and non-government schools.
This year’s average ATAR was 69.20, slightly lower than last year’s average of 69.55. The median ATAR for girls was 71 and 67 for boys.
Almost 17 per cent of students received an ATAR of 90 or above, a third received one of at least 80, 49 per cent received at least 70 and 63per cent at least 60.
Students planning on heading to university next year have until midnight on January 4 to change their preferences for the main round of university offers. Most offers will be made on January 16.
The top performers from the region
Three former St Mary Star of the Sea students weren’t shy about showing their excitement when they logged on to check their ATAR results on Thursday morning.
Excited giggles and congratulatory cheers echoed through the air at Holy Spirit College among the bevy of students who achieved an ATAR of 90 or more.
Twins Katherine and Liisa Ups swear there was no real sibling rivalry between them when they sat their HSC.
Former Wollongong High school captain's ATAR of 97.85 was proof pursuing passions alongside schoolwork worked well.
Kiama High School's Sally Carney felt good after her HSC earth and environmental science exam, but she never expected to end up among the cream of the crop.
Former Smith's Hill students Jenna Owen and Johnny Wong both received ATAR marks they were ecstatic with.
