Judge suspends jail term over $20k fraud

A Wollogong judge yesterday upheld a Warilla man’s appeal against a period behind bars for defrauding Centrelink of more than $20,000, opting to suspend the man’s jail term.

Judge Andrew Haesler granted the severity appeal, lodged by Leslie James Corbett, 55, who had pleaded guilty to two charges of obtaining a financial advantage from the Commonwealth.

In September, Corbett was sentenced to nine months’ jail, for claiming $20,422 in disability pension payments that he wasn’t entitled to receive.

Yesterday in Wollongong District Court, Judge Haesler suspended Corbett’s entire nine-month jail term and placed him on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

The court previously heard that Corbett failed to disclose to Centrelink his casual job as a labourer between October 2007 and April 2010.
