An 18-year-old Sanctuary Point man was arrested after allegedly attempting to flee from police in St Georges Basin in the early hours of Saturday morning.
About 2.25am, police were patrolling Island Point Road when they attempted to pull over a Mitsubishi Lancer that was leaving a shopping centre car park.
As police stopped their vehicle, the Lancer driver reversed harshly before accelerating away, causing the vehicle to lose traction.
The vehicle then spun sideways as it attempted to make a right turn, and crossed on to the incorrect side of the road as it tried a left turn.
Police chose not to pursue the vehicle due to its speed and manner of driving.
However, the vehicle hit the gutter and came to a stop a short distance away.
Police approached the vehicle and a young man was seen still attempting to drive it.
Passengers in the vehicle ran from police, as did the driver.
A man was arrested in a rear yard shortly after.
He was taken to Nowra Police Station where he was later charged with a previous assault, driving without a licence, driving in a dangerous manner and resisting arrest.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at Nowra Local Court in court on January 6.
