Now that lifetime of experience is helping Mr Tory continually smash records since buying back into another Toyota dealership his father, Albert Tory, used to own.
Since Mr Tory and his business partner, David Cosgrove, acquired Illawarra Toyota 14 months ago, it has been breaking records every month.
Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Eastern Region district sales manager Paul Moffat said that it was nothing to do with 2013 luck. It was good management by a man who had been exposed to the industry since childhood.
Illawarra Toyota was born after Albert Tory sold Tory Toyota seven years ago to Tony White.
Mr Tory had also worked for his father in that business and went on to become an owner of Wilsons Holden and then Albion Park Mitsubishi.
When he bought into Illawarra Toyota in October 2012, he and Mr Cosgrove also acquired a major shareholding in a Hino dealership called the South Coast Truck and Buses.
At Illawarra Toyota, the two men oversee a workforce of 135 and they have a target of hitting 250 in the group of motor dealerships they run next year. The four dealerships recently passed the 200 staff mark.
A highlight for Illawarra Toyota this year occurred when the dealership set a new all time monthly new car sales record in October.
That came exactly 10 years since Mr Tory's father set the previous record in 2003.
"And we have achieved these results in a depressed market," he said.
"It has been almost consecutive record months this whole year."
Mr Moffat said no other dealership he knew of had such consistent growth month after month.
"This dealership for the last seven months consecutively has beaten records and this month is looking strong as well. They have really taken it to another level," he said. "Their success is a combination of all things. Ash has created a team of positive people with a positive attitude and you can feel that when you walk into the dealership. At the moment, to be breaking records month in, month out from both a growth and volume perspective is unprecedented."
Mr Tory said it helped knowing the area, the people and the customer service people liked.
"We want to make buying a car a fun and exciting thing," he said.
Mr Tory said many contributed to the recent success such as the staff at Illawarra Toyota.
He said it was good seeing so many familiar faces again and so many people shopping locally.
He said people seemed to like dealing with locally owned and operated businesses.
"There is still a lot of life left in the area," he said.
"This goes to show if you work hard and do the right things by people, the results do come."
