A helium balloon that hit power lines in Ellen Street has sparked a power outage that has affected nearly 300 businesses in the Wollongong CBD.

An Endeavour Energy spokeswoman said the balloon caused a feeder to trip out at the Kenny Street substation.
Wollongong Central and the Illawarra Mercury were among the businesses affected by the power outage which occurred at 8.58am on Tuesday morning.
Christmas Eve shoppers were not inconvenienced for long with power quickly restored to all shops at Wollongong Central.
