The Illawarra's most fascinating people

These five local personalities stand out among the hundreds of people we met in 2013. Read their incredible stories, then tell us who you would add to the list.

THE EMBALMER

Jan Field, Southern Highlands

Jan Field has wanted to work with the dead since the age of five. Her mother, horrified and embarrassed by the idea, would clip her daughter over the head whenever she mentioned it. Jan eventually got her wish. Jodie Duffy gets to know the embalmer here.

THE ENTERTAINER

Rohan Herring, Wollongong

The Illawarra's collective heart swelled with pride when Wollongong singer Rohan Herring appeared on Seven's talent show The X Factor. He had both the audience and judges captivated, first with his moving 'back story', then his stirring performance. Emma Spillett recaps the episode here

THE SHAPESHIFTER

Asher Prior, Warilla

It's official, this Warilla mum has a world-class physique. In March, the primary school teacher muscled up against the big guns of bodybuilding to make her dreams come true. Cydonee Mardon reveals her grueling training regime here.

THE COMEBACK KID

Josh Dugan

Let's be honest. Who thought Canberra's problem child would finish the NRL season with rep credentials, smarter drinking (and Twitter) habits and a baby boy to boot? He showed us. Tim Keeble reports on his future with the Dragons here.

THE GUITAR PRODIGY

Jack Heath, Woonona

Jack is a synesthete - when he hears music he also sees a visual representation of it, experiencing musical notes almost like they're art. Benjamin Long introduces us to the teen with the rare sixth sense here.
