Michael James Roberts is accused of telling neighbours he had been stabbed during a home invasion, when in fact he made up the report.
Police claim the 58-year-old went to a house on Bradman Avenue in Warilla about 10pm on Sunday, seeking help as he had been "stabbed".
The home owners called triple-0, sending dozens of emergency services personnel, including detectives, forensic officers, the dog unit and the rescue squad, to the scene.
Paramedics also attended the home and treated Roberts for cuts to his face and shoulder.
When detectives from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command further investigated the incident, they allegedly discovered the man had fabricated the report and staged a crime scene at his house.
Police also claim Roberts' injuries were self-inflicted.
Roberts was charged with making a false statement resulting in a police investigation on Sunday night and refused bail, pending his appearance in Wollongong Local Court yesterday.
His bid for bail was not opposed by the prosecution but they did order that Roberts continue to live in Warilla and report to police three times a week.
Roberts is set to re-appear in Port Kembla Local Court on January 29.
