Kids Day Out proved such a huge hit with children last year that the free day of reading, writing, drawing, making and storytelling is back again in 2014.
Thirroul District Community Centre and Library will again host the event on Thursday, January 16, from 10am-4pm, organised by the Illawarra-South Coast Children’s Book Council and supported by Wollongong City Council.
At last year’s inaugural Kids Day Out about 250 children showed up, many dressed as their favourite book characters, surpassing organiser’s expectations.
Branch secretary Margaret Wolfe said about a dozen children’s authors and/or illustrators will be giving their time and expertise freely to allow preschoolers to 14-year-olds to experience the wonders of the written word.
The authors attending include Aleesah Darlison, Richard Harland, Sandy Fussell, Lesley Vamos, Tony Flowers, D.C.Green, Lilli Pang, Wai Chim, Jan Latta, Jodie Wells-Slowgrove and Di Ellis. Marie Smith will host a fairy tale playtime for younger children.
Activities include storytelling, dress-ups, magic gardens and book-related craft, workshops on picture books, teamwork, writing, the art of zines and cartoon drawing, as well as a film and author talk on exotic animals.
Children are encouraged to dress up as a book character and there will be spot prizes.
All children need to register from 9.15am on the day only. Children need to be accompanied by an adult who are encouraged to use the library or coffee shop while waiting.
