PHOTOS: Icy reception for Canadian back home

Wollongong's Paul Cuthbertson has experienced firsthand the full force of the freak ‘‘polar vortex’’ sweeping the US and Canada.

The Canadian expat, who has lived in the Illawarra for five years, has been visiting family in his home country since Christmas Day, arriving just in time to feel the brunt of the extreme cold.

He sent the Mercury some incredible snaps of the chilly weather, including shots of a lake steaming due to the cold.

‘‘It was so cold the other day that [our beer froze] within a few minutes,’’ he said.

‘‘My parents were without power for six days from the ice storm and it was restored three hours before I arrived.’’

He said the weather had slowly started to warm up – just in time for his return to Australia today.
