Golden Globes: Red carpet drenched by fire sprinkler

Last-minute preparations for the Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles have been thrown into disarray after a fire sprinkler was accidentally activated, drenching the red carpet just hours before the stars were due to arrive.

A television crew member holding a light fixture reportedly bumped the sprinkler outside the entrance to the Beverly Hilton Hotel, which is hosting the 71st annual awards ceremony, according to entertainment website Variety.

Water drenched about one fifth of the carpet and media were escorted from the area while Beverly Hills firefighters checked the sprinkler system.

Variety reported that workers hauled out a huge vacuum cleaner and industrial strength fans to soak up the water, and cut new sections of carpet to cover the most drenched areas.

The accident occurred about 1.30pm local time, several hours before the stars were due to begin arriving.
