The popular surfer set records throughout her junior years and in 2011 won her first ASP World Tour event at Bells Beach.
The Mercury recently named her the Illawarra Sportsperson of the Year.
In addition to her multiple achievements as a surfer, the 23-year-old was recognised at last night's awards for her commitment to public campaigns.
She is an ambassador for the NSW Police Play Safe, Stay Safe anti-binge drinking campaign, the Run Wollongong children's ward charity and Kiama Tourism, among others.
Fitzgibbons said it felt special to be nominated for the award, especially as it was in her local community.
"Everyone is so appreciative and supportive," she said.
The surfing star is preparing for her next overseas tour by contesting a number of events in Australia.
"I'll be giving it everything I've got this year ... adding new manoeuvres to my surfing menu."
