Keira street closure as tunnellers start digging

Wollongong's Keira Street is set to close tonight to allow for further work on the GPT West Keira development.

The work was ear-marked for last week but was moved to tonight, between 9pm and 5am, due to changes in the construction schedule.

GPT West Keira development manager Steven Turner said the company had completed some re-sequencing of construction works last week and the date change would allow crews to complete additional work.

The one-night closure of the road, between Crown and Market streets, is to change the traffic flow from the two lanes on the eastern side to those on the western side.

The changes will allow work to continue on the underground tunnel linking the development with Crown Central.

Crews have completed tunnel work on the western side and are set to start digging the tunnel underneath the two eastern lanes and into the shopping centre.

During the excavation, a section of footpath on the eastern side of the road will be closed.
