A wretched season with injury didn't stop Albion Park junior Kieran Govers from going within a whisker of being crowned the men's FIH Player of the Year.
The London Olympian was among the final short-list of players for the top gong after spending a large portion of 2013 on the sideline with hamstring and hernia problems.
Joining a 10-man list, including Australian teammate Mark Knowles, Govers was eventually edged out by German defensive midfielder Tobias Hauke at a special presentation ceremony following the Hockey World League final.
Govers and fellow Illawarra product Tristan White had been members of the Kookaburras squad that failed to medal at the first Hockey World League competition.
