Steven Augoustou is accused of assaulting the female officer and damaging property including a police car.

He was on bail for unrelated matters when the incident allegedly occurred and faced Wollongong Local Court yesterday in a bid for bail on the latest charges.

The court heard Augoustou had spent Australia Day at a friend's barbecue, and later the beach.

About 8.45pm he was walking on Pleasant Ave, North Wollongong, when he allegedly ran at a police car and rammed several of the car's doors with his body.

The female officer's foot was allegedly slammed as she went to get out of the car.

Opposing bail, prosecutor Sergeant Amelia Wall told the court Augoustou had only recently completed a term of imprisonment for "very serious" offences.

But Augoustou's solicitor told the court he denied the allegations and felt he was "often targeted by police when out on the streets".

The court heard Augoustou, 26, suffered mental health problems and his mother was receiving a carer's pension to assist him.

Registrar Nicole Hoffman took into account the support provided to Augoustou by family members including his mother, who was present in court, and a cousin, who agreed to act as surety.

"This was an unprovoked attack and you do have a previous breach of bail ... I'm going to grant a very strict conditional bail today."

Augoustou is under an alcohol ban until his next court date on March 11.
