Despite the weather warnings, the nine fans from Wollongong boarded a flight on Friday morning to watch the Hawks take on the Townsville Crocodiles.
Diehard fan and Hawks director Tania Brown said the group made the final decision at 7am to go ahead with the trip.
An hour later they left for their 10.30am flight.
‘‘If there was extreme weather we didn’t want to come and be an imposition on emergency services,’’ Ms Brown said from Townsville.
‘‘But we spoke to the airport, Hawks management and our hotel who all assured us it would be OK.’’
Ms Brown said the players appreciated their fans making the effort to attend home and away games.
‘‘We’ve seen how much our support means to the players,’’ she said. “They really thrive on it and draw a lot of energy from it.”
The Hawks Pit Crew have one-metre sized replicas of players’ heads which the group borrowed especially for the interstate trip.
Ms Brown was hoping the giant heads would intimidate the Crocodiles.
Tropical cyclone Dylan had weakened to a tropical low by Friday.
