The Discovery Days program is a five-day recruitment event for year 12 students from across the state, the ACT and Victoria.

Each student is given the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a university student with a personalised timetable.

Program co-ordinator Chiara Rigoni said it was important to give students a day to "try before they buy".

"University is a high involvement decision, you don't make it lightly," she said.

"Giving the students this experience can help them decide if this is for them."

Discovery Day volunteer and current UOW Law/Arts student Samuel Bailey, 22, said the program was a great way for teenagers to get an understanding of what university is about.

"It's a fantastic week," he said.

"It's really exciting to see high school students excited and passionate about university."

Mr Bailey attended a Discovery Day when he was in year 12. He said it influenced his decision to enrol at UOW.

Students from St Mary Star of the Sea College Wollongong went to yesterday's Discovery Day.

Izabella Mok, 17, said she wanted to attend the Discovery Day because she wasn't sure what she wanted to study next year.

"I was a bit sceptical about what I wanted to choose here, so I thought this would help me find what I wanted to do," she said.

"I really want to do psychology now. It's been really helpful talking to current students."

Students enrol at 9am and attend a compulsory session in which a current UOW student talks about university life.

The rest of the day consists of four 45-minute sessions about different degrees and aspects of university life.
