Every week we will bring you a wrap of new music, gig announcements and news from bands in the region, to highlight great musicians and music that might otherwise go unnoticed.
• Wollongong Council’s new Arts precinct will now host live local music every Wednesday. Bec Sandridge and Justin Frew kicked off the new series of ‘Lunch time at the Arts Precinct,’ which will feature Illawarra musicians every week from 12-2pm. To be a part of it, email culturalservices@wollongong.nsw.gov.au
• The Flix In The Stix touring film festival is coming up, with a handful of award-winning films and performances by Eskimo Joe and the Axis of Awesome. It’s at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens on March 7, and one local band has a chance to play and go into the draw for $5000 from the Commonwealth Bank. It’s a public vote, so check Flix In The Stix on Facebook to sign up or vote for your favourite.
• The line-up for the annual UOW Garden Party is coming together, with Jeremy Neale, Saskwatch and Hey Geronimo joining the bill. The March 13 gig at the Unibar, which had already announced Sticky Fingers and Elizabeth Rose as headliners, will be receiving one last addition soon. Tickets on sale now.
• The Parkside crew have their second birthday coming up, and it’s set to be another big one. They’ve got LA producer Mark ‘MK’ Kinchen locked in, alongside Sydney DJ Lancelot. The party is set to take over the Hotel Illawarra and its outdoor on February 16.
• Arguably Wollongong’s most eclectic band, Troldhaugen, have announced a national tour in March with Melbourne band Toehider. Mixing folk and heavy metal, with touches of jazz and cabaret and a heavy dose of over-the-top silliness, Troldhaugen will play up and down the East Coast before hitting Rad Bar on March 16.
• Jenny Broke The Window are FBI Radio’s ‘unsigned artist of the month.’ The Sydney community radio station are in love with the Wollongong boys lately, after JBTW’s song Abracadabra was named the station’s 47th most played track of 2013.
