A 20-tonne semi-trailer caused major traffic delays at Kiama on Tuesday after it ploughed through a guardrail on the Princes Highway.

Police said the northbound truck crashed through the barricade and slid down an embankment near the Kiama Heights exit about 12.40pm.

The truck and dog trailer were empty at the time, and the driver was not injured.

One of two northbound lanes was closed for several hours while the truck was salvaged and NSW Fire and Rescue and Hazmat crews cleaned up a fuel leak.
