The exhibition will contain archive footage from the notorious "razor gang" era, made famous through the Underbelly television series.
Razor gangs began using blades to threaten victims after State Parliament introduced severe penalties for carrying firearms in 1927.
The exhibition, much of which is on loan from Sydney's Justice and Police Museum, contains recorded interviews with past officers, DVDs of historical footage, and old photos.
Vintage police cars and a rescue boat will be on display around Wollongong Harbour, while the police rescue squad will dismantle a car to show the public what happens in a serious crash.
Inspector Brian Wyver encouraged residents to attend the exhibition. "It's just a celebration of policing in the Wollongong area," he said.
"It's a first, no other local area command has done it before, so we're hoping other LACs will take it on and present their history to the community.
"We've been involved in the community of Wollongong since around about the 1850s."
Officers will also be on hand to provide information to anyone considering joining the police force.
The event takes place at Wollongong Harbour from 8am to 4pm on Saturday.
