In a major coup for the region, Wollongong theatre company MoonGlow Productions has secured the rights to stage the Australian amateur premiere of the hit Broadway musical Legally Blonde.
Beating out hundreds of other theatre companies across the country, MoonGlow successfully bid to stage the production at the WIN Entertainment Centre on July 4 and 5.
Director Wendy Glover said the show was a win for the region and demonstrated its strong theatre following.
‘‘It shows that we have a wealth of talent here and an audience that is willing to get behind local productions,’’ she said.
‘‘For Wollongong to get the rights over big companies from Sydney and Melbourne is really exciting – it shows the Illawarra is a force to be reckoned with on the national theatre scene.’’
Based on the hit movie starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde follows the tale of Elle Woods as she enters Harvard Law School to win back her former flame.
Mrs Glover said the film leant itself perfectly to a musical and had become a hit worldwide.
‘‘It’s one of those shows that you leave feeling like you’ve had a good time - it’s a lot of fun to watch,’’ she said.
‘‘The script is funny and very clever, it’s a wonderful show for any actor to take on because it’s quite fast-paced and dynamic.
‘‘It’s got some beautiful musical numbers too and I think audiences have just fallen in love with the songs.’’
The cast features 40 of the region’s premier performers, including many people from last year’s smash hit Hairspray, along with some new faces.
‘‘We’ve been really lucky that we’ve had a lot of interest in the show,’’ Mrs Glover said.
‘‘It’s great to see new people auditioning because it means we’re expanding the company - we’ve always seen MoonGlow as a family so we’re just growing the family in every show.’’
i98FM breakfast announcer Bianca Dye will make her Illawarra musical theatre debut in the show, playing kooky hairdresser Paulette.
Tickets for Legally Blonde go on sale on Monday (March 10) at 9am via Ticketek.
