Construction has started on a 24-hour fire station at Albion Park.
Illawarra Fire and Rescue NSW zone commander Ed Salinas said the station, which would replace the part-time station at Albion Park Rail, was expected to be operational by August.
He said the new facility would allow FRNSW to better protect the community.
‘‘It’s an enhancement to Fire and Rescue’s presence in the Illawarra,’’ he said.
‘‘Staffing is based on a resource allocation model which takes into account issues such as population growth, infrastructure and ... housing development, as well as other factors.
‘‘It means Fire and Rescue NSW is continuously considering the environment in which it operates.’’
Mr Salinas said three officers and one station commander plus retained firefighters would be at the station 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
When finished, it will be the sixth full-time fire station in the Illawarra.
