Endeavour Energy sent contractors to the home three weeks ago with tree loppers. They accessed the native from the adjoining reserve, chopping branches away from overhead power lines.
What remained was a one-sided gumtree that leant dangerously close to the house, Mr Henderson said.
"There must be several tonnes of branches leaning to one side, particularly when the tree is wet those branches get so heavy," Mr Henderson said.
"With the southerly busters that come through our backyard at night we don't sleep at all. We're afraid every time there's a storm that a branch is going to come smashing through the roof."
Mr Henderson said gumtrees were notorious for dropping branches at any time.
"I can understand them trimming the tree for safety reasons regarding the power lines but what about our safety?
"Look how the tree is leaning. My daughter and grandsons sleep under that roof."
Last month Bridget Wright, 8, died when she was struck by a falling branch from a large gumtree at Pitt Town Public School.
An Endeavour Energy spokesman said a specialist had met Mrs Henderson on Wednesday afternoon to inspect the tree and assessed it to be strong and healthy and in line with pruning of the tree over the past decade. The company will monitor the situation. Green waste left by the contractor behind Mr Henderson's fence was also removed.
