Scramble for top four

Towradgi earned their first win of the pennants season and Zoran Bosev and partners ensured Dapto Citizens were victorious over Figtree RSL in round four matches last Saturday.

Towradgi won just a single rink in the opening three rounds but gave their  semi-finals hopes a huge boost with an 88-46 (6-0) home thrashing of Albion Park.

A 3-0 rinks win gave Thirroul seven points from four rounds. While they remain in seventh spot, they’re likely to be among several clubs chasing fourth spot at the end of the season.

Dapto Citizens lost two of the three rinks away to Figtree RSL but a 29-11 win by Bosev over Warner Jones was crucial to their 4-2 points win.

Dapto Citizens won on the big board  64-50 despite Figtree RSL skip Peter Thelan beating Ben Ford 22-19 and reigning Illawarra Zone 16 singles champion Brett Pieper and partners beating Steven Green 17-16.

Dapto Citizens displaced Figtree RSL as leaders after four rounds but just four points separate first from sixth-placed Albion Park.

Reigning champions Warilla moved up to fifth with a crushing 91-30 (6-0) away victory over Thirroul.

In other round four results, Shellharbour continued Woonona’s poor start to the season with a 64-43 (6-0) away victory.

The Woonona side is made up mainly of the promoted Bulli No 2 team but have yet to win a rink in the opening four rounds. Corrimal are also struggling with just a single rink win all season and were outclassed 67-38 (6-0) by Wiseman Park.

The top two teams in Grade 2, Windang and Kiama, produced a two-point thriller in their round four clash last Saturday.

Leaders Windang won only one rink but took the honours 59-57 (4-2).

Windang skip Mark Larsen and partners were the difference with a 20-12 win over Russell Campbell while Kiama won the other two rinks narrowly.

Brad Rossiter beat Rick Malley 23-20 and Martin Wilson beat Craig Roberts 22-19.

In this Saturday’s round five play in Grade 1, Albion Park host Corrimal, Thirroul are at home to Woonona, Warilla welcomes Figtree RSL, Shellharbour will host Towradgi and Wiseman Park are at home to Dapto Citizens in the match of the round.
