False alarm: North Wollongong 'skydiver' was cutaway chute

UPDATED 10.15AM: Reports of a sky diver falling into water 200 metres off North Wollongong beach have turned out to be false.

Lifesavers, who were first at the scene, said a skydiver had cut loose a primary chute during a jump and it was what people saw fall into the ocean.

Surf Life Saving NSW spokesman Matt Miller said police told them the initial chute hadn’t worked and the skydiver cut it free.

No one was injured.

But Skydive The Beach owner Anthony Boucaut dismissed the reports and said it was likely someone had made a hoax call to Triple 0.

“We haven’t had any cutaway, we haven’t had a jettison, there was no dummy chute,” he said.

“It appears a member of the community has caused chaos by making a hoax call to Triple 0.

“Perhaps this person needs to get a job and a life.”
