Guilty plea over Albion Park fire attack

A teen accused of dousing a woman in fire accelerant in front of an open fire at Albion Park Rail has pleaded guilty to the attack in Wollongong District Court.

Police were called to a home in Koona Street at 12.15pm on July 12, last year, by emergency services personnel after a woman was found with serious burns.

Police said the woman was covered in an accelerant which caught fire as she was standing near an open fire.

The 19-year-old was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition and later treated for significant burns to her arms, chest and stomach.

On Monday, a young male, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to one charge of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm in relation to the attack.

He will reappear in court for sentencing on May 16.
