PHOTOS: Heavy rains hit the South Coast

The South Coast received a drenching from the heavy rains on Monday night.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 113mm of rain at Bellambi since noon on Monday, 126mm at Albion Park, 138mm at Kiama and 158mm at Nowra.

The floodwaters made a mess of North Wollongong Beach, north of the surf club, leaving massive piles of debris and litter in their wake.

The rains also led to localised flooding in areas like Berry and Bulli.

Trains began running again between Wollongong and Port Kembla on the South Coast Line at 4pm on Tuesday afternoon  after earlier flooding at Port Kembla.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Transport Management Centre said the Princes Highway is closed for light vehicles between Belinda Street and Toolijooa Road in Gerringong due to flooding.

Light vehicles are being diverted via Fern Street, Crooked River Road, Beach Road and Tannery Road.

Meanwhile, the Illawarra Highway remains closed between the Princes Highway and Tongarra Road at Albion Park Rail because of flooding.

Motorists are advised to use Tongarra Road as an alternative route.
