The man was being taken to a Figtree address after a domestic violence incident when he allegedly began punching the door and yelling abuse at police.
He then kicked the perspex window, causing the top of the frame to bend, police said.
He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with malicious damage.
It was estimated the bill would exceed $5000.
Meantime, police stopped a 16-year-old Warrawong boy who was riding a suspected stolen pushbike along Kully Way, Warrawong on Wednesday night.
After a brief conversation, the boy acknowledged the bike, valued at $2500 was probably stolen.
Police seized the bicycle pending further enquiries.
The young person will be interviewed in accordance with requirements of the Young Offenders Act.
