Mr McKeen received the Olympic Order of Merit from the NSW Olympic Council on Wednesday.
The Illawarra Connection president Roger Summerill spoke of Mr McKeen's efforts when he addressed 300 business and civic leaders at the TIC black tie dinner on Tuesday night.
"As many of you know, Gareth was the manager of the Australian equestrian team and attended the Atlanta, Sydney and Athens Olympic Games," Mr Summerill said.
"During this time the team won two gold and one silver medal."
Mr McKeen also chaired the Illawarra Olympic Fundraising Committee and he is responsible for overseeing the Illawarra Olympic Tribute Wall at Lang Park.
Mr Summerill said it was recognised as the only Olympic tribute wall of its kind in Australia.
Mr McKeen said he was taken aback by the recognition.
He said very few Olympic Order of Merits were handed out and he did not consider himself to have done anything as significant as others who had been awarded one.
Mr McKeen said all those people were his Olympic heroes and a great inspiration.
