Seconds later Sydney teenager Liam Knight was found lying face down with a 2.5-metre steel pole sticking out of his head, a court heard on Thursday.
The father in charge of an 18th birthday party on Sydney's northern beaches described finding the 17-year-old on the ground.
''He had a rebar [steel pole] protruding from his head, in excess of 2.5 metres,'' Philip Staples told the Downing Centre District Court.
The St Pius X College student was left fighting for his life in a coma and suffered permanent brain injuries.
Mr Staples described how an uninvited teenager climbed on to his shed roof after he was asked to leave the party.
''Building materials started to be hurled,'' Mr Staples said. ''It was quite frenzied, throwing as much as possible as quickly as possible.''
Mr Staples gave evidence during the trial of Jimmy Tupou, 19, and another teenager.
