While the South Coast Wolves are still chasing their first win of the season, the emergence of Darcy Madden on the left flank has given fans something to cheer about.
The 17-year-old has established himself as key in an improving Wolves' defensive line, just two games into his return season.
Already training with A-League side Sydney FC, Madden spent the past 2½ years at the Australian Institute of Sport.
But a return to his boyhood club to launch his young career has always been on the cards.
"I wasn't really too sure what to expect," Madden said.
"I just came to training and put in obviously well enough to get a look-in, in the second week and the third week.
"Obviously we have a goal to start doing better on the pitch and start winning but I am happy Richard [Lloyd] has given me the opportunity because I definitely wasn't thinking I'd just walk in."
Madden's smooth touch and deep overlapping runs no doubt caught Lloyd's eye.
After starting as a centre-back, he honed his game at left-back under the tutelage of one of Australia's greats.
"I went to the AIS and they moulded me into a wide back," Madden said.
"And obviously having Tony Vidmar as a coach, he was a fullback in Europe so he has taught me the ins and outs of the position."
Like Zac MacKenzie, James Baldacchino and Josh Bingham before him, Madden wants to use the NPL NSW men's 1 competition as a springboard to greater heights.
"I am fortunate enough to probably be in the best league in Australia under the A-League," he said.
"I have played in both and I rate the NPL better than the [A-League] Youth League so I think it is a great place to showcase your talent. Playing week in, week out with men who have been around the block."
After a man-of-the-match performance in last week's 1-1 draw with Sydney Olympic, Madden is in line for selection again on Sunday against Rockdale City Suns.
"They have been going all right so it will be a good challenge," Madden said.
"Hopefully we can step up and get a result because that is really what the club needs at the moment."
