The narrow one-lane bridge at Shone Avenue, off West Dapto Road, has long been one of just two routes into Horsley and West Dapto, and is undergoing an overhaul as part of the council's West Dapto Access Strategy.
The first stage of the works - a road realignment - is almost finished, allowing the approval of a two lane bridge and channel works to go ahead.
Council staff have recommended councillors accept a $5.3 million tender from Sydney-based civil engineering firm, Abergeldie Contractors.
The firm was awarded the $5.6 million contract for the first stage of works last March.
Shone Avenue will close completely for six months while the bridge is built, which staff say was cheaper and less risky for contractors and residents than allowing the road to stay open during construction.
The closure will not go ahead until a link connecting Fairwater Drive and Cleveland Road is complete, ensuring there are at least two access roads for Horsley and West Dapto residents.
The link is scheduled to be finished by August or September but the recommended tender allows for delays of up to four months.
The council received $13.92 million from the former federal government's Building Better Regional Cities program to help with the Shone Avenue project.
