Do's portrait of local shopowner Paul Hickman won the People's Choice award and was declared the overall runner-up by judges. It netted him a $1250 prize, which he decided to to donate to his local surf club.
"I love everything about the Illawarra. I love going to the beach, and being part of the community, so I thought I'd support the surf club," he said.
A renowned comedian, actor and award-winning author, Do has made painting a bigger part of his resume in recent years. Studying at Wollongong TAFE and under the tutelage of renowned Illawarra artist Paul Ryan, Do has rekindled a love of art he has harboured since childhood.
"I'd sit in maths class at school, pretending to do maths, but drawing the side of my mate's head from across the classroom," he laughed.
"Art is something different to comedy. You put yourself on the line with both, but I sometimes feel more comfortable with painting."
