As Anzac Day falls within the school holidays, primary and secondary students from across Wollongong gathered on Wednesday to commemorate the anniversary with a ceremony at the city's cenotaph in MacCabe Park.
Although the service was organised by the Wollongong RSL Sub-Branch, the ceremony was run by students from the different schools.
Several spoke eloquently about what Anzac Day meant to them and shared stories of their relatives who had fought in various conflicts.
Jack Green, vice-captain at Fairy Meadow Demonstration School, said the day was a time for reflection and appreciation.
"We are here to remember those who fought and died," he told the gathering.
Representatives from each school laid colourful floral wreaths while music students played musical interludes.
Members of the 26 Regional Cadet Unit performed the official duties, including lowering the Australian flag to half mast.
